Landfall IP, the AI-native patent firm founded by Michael Drapkin and Nathan Mutter, earned a feature this week in Law.com’s Legaltech News, where the co-founders explained the thinking behind their hybrid model — one of just 18 AI-native law firms recognized globally, and the only patent practice on the list.
Asked what makes the firm different, Drapkin was clear that Landfall was not designed as a marginal upgrade to the traditional model. The goal, he explained, was to build a patent firm that is “fundamentally different, not just incrementally better”. As he put it, “innovators deserve a process that is faster, clearer, more strategic, and more predictable.”
That prompted the obvious question of whether AI is meant to replace the attorney. Drapkin pushed back on the premise. “AI is not replacing the patent attorney,” he said. “It is elevating what the best attorneys can deliver. Our role becomes more strategic, more analytical, and more focused on judgment.” In the firm’s model, senior attorneys review and approve every AI output before it reaches a client.
Mutter pointed to the firm’s Discovery Agent as the clearest example of that philosophy in practice. The tool, he explained, “flips the early part of the patent process on its head.” Rather than lengthy intake forms and uncertain next steps, “founders experience a streamlined system that helps them crystallize their ideas”. That gives early-stage teams clarity before they invest in drafting or filing.
Mutter framed the bigger picture as an inflection point for the profession. “Patent law is on the cusp of a major transformation,” he said. “The firms that thrive will be those that embrace new technology not as a novelty, but as a core architecture for delivering superior client outcomes.
