At Colorado Startup Week, Landfall IP co-founders Nathan Mutter and Michael Drapkin, together with Christine LaBerge, presented “Can AI File Your Patent? What Founders Should Know Before Going DIY.”

AI is giving founders powerful new ways to develop ideas, investigate prior art, organize invention disclosures, and even prepare patent filings. But the ease of generating sophisticated-looking work can obscure some of the most important strategic questions: what is actually worth protecting, what should remain a trade secret, when public disclosure can jeopardize rights, and whether a filing will provide meaningful protection as the company evolves.

The discussion focused on a practical framework for using AI intelligently: where founders can do more themselves, where AI-generated work should be pressure tested, and where experienced patent judgment remains critical. The goal is not to choose between AI and expertise, but to combine them in ways that make high-quality patent strategy more accessible, efficient, and effective for startups.
